چکیده

This paper continues our study of the behaviour of near infrared helium recombination lines in planetary nebula. We find that the 1.7007μm 4D–3P HeI line is a good measure of the HeI recombination rate, since it varies smoothly with the effective temperature of the central star. We were unable to reproduce the observed data using detailed photoionisation models at both low and high effective temperatures, but plausible explanations for the difference exist for both. We therefore conclude that this line could be used as an indicator of the effective temperature in obscured nebula. We also characterised the nature of the molecular hydrogen emission present in a smaller subset of our sample. The results are consistent with previous data indicating that ultraviolet excitation rather than shocks is the main cause of the molecular hydrogen emission in planetary nebulae.

Planetary nebula or symbiotic Mira ? Near infrared colours mark the difference ?

Nebulae around symbiotic Miras look very much like genuine planetary nebulae, although they are formed in a slightly different way. We present near infrared photometry of known and suspected symbiotic nebulae obtained with the Deep Near Infrared Southern Sky Survey (DENIS). We demonstrate that the near infrared colours are an excellent tool to distinguish symbiotic from genuine planetary nebula...

D ec 1 99 5 A Butterfly in the Making : Revealing the Near - Infrared Structure of Hubble 12

We present deep narrowband near-IR images and moderate resolution spectra of the young planetary nebula Hubble 12. These data are the first to show clearly the complex structure for this important planetary nebula. Images were obtained at λ = 2.12, 2.16, and 2.26 μm. The λ = 2.12 μm image reveals the bipolar nature of the nebula, as well as complex structure near the central star in the equator...

Discovery of Lyα Pumped Molecular Hydrogen Emission in the Planetary Nebulae

We report the first observation of Lyα pumped molecular hydrogen emission lines in planetary nebulae. The H2 emission observed in the ultraviolet spectra of NGC 6853 and NGC 3132 can be explained by excitation of vibrationally hot H2 by Lyα photons. Constraints are placed on the nebular Lyα emission profile, as well as the molecular hydrogen temperature, column density and turbulent motion. The...

Spectral Analysis of Central Stars of Planetary Nebulae

Spectral analysis by means of NLTE model atmospheres has presently arrived at a high level of sophistication. High-resolution spectra of central stars of planetary nebulae can be reproduced in detail from the infrared to the X-ray wavelength range. In the case of LSV+46◦21, the exciting star of Sh 2−216, we demonstrate the state-of-the-art in the determination of photospheric properties like, e...
